News: Study Trip, Spring 2019
Date: April 22 to June 2, 2019
Destination: Anhui province (China), Taipei (Taiwan), Tokyo, Kyoto, Matsumoto (Japan)

My destinations will include Anhui province in China, Taipei in Taiwan, Kyoto, Tokyo and Matsumoto in Japan. In Anhui province, I will learn about the skills to process Tai Ping Hou Kui - an intangible cultural heritage listed on a national level in China. I will also learn about the meticulous work required in the refinement of Keemun red/fully oxidized tea (also an intangible cultural heritage) and the processing of Liu An black/fermented tea. In Taipei, I will take lessons on the art of Chinese tea, attend a ceramic exhibition, learn breathing techniques and attend a floral arrangement session. In Japan, I will visit two craft shows, meetup with my longtime friends for a soba-making experience, and take lessons on the way of sencha. To avoid getting my shoes wet this spring, I will definitely put a pair of rain boots in my luggage!

Event: An exhibition of Japanese crafts for everyday living
Date: November 9 to November 15, 2018
Destination: Taipei (Taiwan)

I will be travelling to Taipei to attend an exhibition with a Chinese title of 日本生活器物展 and an English title of Living Crafts Beside Life. The exhibition, which took two years to plan, was organized by famous wood craftsman 三谷龍二 Ryuji Mitani, and hosted by teacher 謝小曼Hsieh Xiao Man. I will be attending the exhibition as part of the general audience, a guest at the artist-hosted tea gathering events, and a volunteer to introduce and provide assistance to the attendees relating to the displayed items selected from the collection of the exhibition.

Event: Wuyi Mountain Wulong Tea Gathering
Date: January 11 to January 27, 2018
Destination: Taipei (Taiwan)

I accepted my teacher, Yi Ching Laoshi’s invitation to attend her tea gathering which featured twelve original tea tree varieties found in Wuyi Mountain located in Fujian, China. Winter is a great time to enjoy Wuyi Mountain tea especially vintage ones. The collection of vintage teas featured in this gathering took Yi Ching Laoshi two years to complete.
