In the beginning, tea was prepared by boiling tea leaves in a pot then served in bowls for drinking. Between the 9th and 13th century, tea was prepared directly in each bowl by whipping tea powder with water in China and Japan. This Way of Tea has been preserved as an important cultural heritage known as Chanoyu in Japan.
You will learn about the evolution of the art of tea from a Zen Buddhist temple tea ceremony to a national heritage of aesthetics and spirituality in Japan. You will taste various qualities of maccha, which is steamed green tea in powder form. You will also experience how maccha is prepared, served and consumed in a Japanese tea ceremony.
Elaine Tsien, TAC TEA SOMMELIER, will guide you through this workshop.

Suitability:
The Exploration Series is an extension of our Introduction and Foundation Series. While there are no pre-requisites to attending this Series, it is suitable for you to apply your previously acquired knowledge and skills to continue your practice of the classical art of tea, and to explore the diverse and rich materials included in the art.
If you are new to the classical art of tea and are interested in attending this workshop, you are welcome to join us with the expectation that we will try to meet your needs as long as they are consistent with the objectives outlined for this workshop.
